Former President Barack Obama's office issued a rare statement on Tuesday responding to the latest flurry of attacks from President Donald Trump.

In terms of day-to-day events, the former president tends to steer clear of the arena. There are, however, occasional exceptions.

Former President Obama swung back at President Trump on Tuesday in a rare response to unfounded accusations. The big picture: Trump peddled conspiracy theories about Obama, telling reporters the former president tried to rig the 2016 presidential election.

Besides Obama, President Trump on Tuesday rattled off a list of people he accused of acting criminally "at the highest level."

A spokesperson for the former president called Trump's claim that Obama tried to rig the 2016 election "a weak attempt at a distraction."

Although it had been rare for there to be so much friction between current and former occupants of the Oval Office, Obama has been a frequent target of Trump’s attacks.
