South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who lawmakers voted to impeach and was indicted on criminal charges for declaring martial law last December, was cleared to be released from detention on Friday.

Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was released from jail Saturday, a day after a court's ruling that allowed him to stand trial without physical detention over his failed bid to impose martial law in December.

As the South Korean Constitutional Court’s impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol heads toward its finish, a second trial has opened at the Seoul District Court, in which the president is charged with the crime of insurrection.
