Hurricane Lowell lashed Hawaii with damaging winds, heavy rainfall and powerful floods, knocking out power for 91% of a western island as it pushed farther into the Pacific on Tuesday.

Officials in Hawaii are urging residents to prepare for heavy rains and flooding as Hurricane Lowell, a major Category 3 storm, prompted forecasters to issue a tropical storm warning for two islands.

The Hawaiian Islands rarely see significant hurricane damage, but they just experienced the effects of their second hurricane in a year as Hurricane Lowell’s eyewall brushed Niihau, west of Kauai, on Sept.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, Tropical Storm Lowell was 310 miles north-northwest of Lihue and was moving to the north at 15 miles per hour.
