Israel's parliament is set to hold a preliminary vote on Wednesday to dissolve itself following a dispute over conscription, a first step that could lead to an early election, which polls show Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would lose.

When the opposition called for the vote, Deputy Minister Yaakov Tesler and MK Moshe Roth of Agudat Yisrael voted in favor of dissolving the Knesset.
The bill to disperse the Knesset was voted down 53-61 at about 3 a.m., and as a consequence, opposition parties will not be able to propose similar legislation for six months. The Haredi parties, however, could still submit a bill to call an early election should negotiations not go their way.
Deputy Minister Uri Maklev, Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri, led a behind-the-scenes effort to block Knesset's dissolution, securing protections for yeshiva students from arrest amid looming IDF draft enforcement.
The vote to dissolve the Knesset is expected to happen around 10 p.m. after opposition party heads unanimously agreed to vote on the issue.
