The attacks in southern Syria are part of a new policy aimed at protecting what Israel calls its “security zone” in the region. Syria’s new government has condemned that policy.

The Israeli military said it struck command centers and weapons storage facilities during the strikes. Before the airstrikes, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had called for southern Syria's demilitarization. He had voiced concerns over the presence of forces from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) or the new Syrian army south of Damascus.

Syria condemned on Tuesday Israel's incursion into its territories and called for Israel to withdraw, according to a the closing statement of a national dialogue summit organised by Syria's new Islamist rulers to outline the country's political roadmap.
