At least 1 dead in Hawaii after Hurricane Lowell devastates parts of the state, governor says
Hurricane Lowell has had a “devastating” impact on Hawaii after sweeping past the state’s islands, leaving at least one person dead, damaging homes and knocking out power to tens of thousands, according to Gov.
Hurricane Lowell shutters schools across Oahu, Kauai and Niihau as Hawaii braces for flooding, strong winds and dangerous surf.
Fierce winds downed trees and caused widespread power outages on the island of Kauai, home to 73,000 residents.
The powerful storm is not expected to make a direct landfall but is still forecast to bring serious weather to the islands.
Forecasters warn Lowell could be near major hurricane strength as it moves close to the western Hawaiian Islands next week.
