Officials at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Friday ordered staff “to begin finding tens of millions of dollars for a Starlink deal” to upgrade air traffic control communications, anonymous sources have told Rolling Stone.

The Federal Aviation Administration is considering awarding Musk’s SpaceX a contract to provide Starlink internet service for its air traffic control communications network, possibly replacing a deal with Verizon, which was awarded a contract for the FAA’s internet technology in 2023, according to multiple reports.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is offering technology from his company’s Starlink to the Federal Aviation Administration to “restore air traffic control connectivity” as he warns the current systems pose a safety risk.
