Hurricane Lowell brought hurricane-force wind gusts and heavy seas to Hawaii’s westernmost islands late Monday night as the dangerous storm passed near Niihau and just west of Kauai. According to an 11:00 p.

Hurricane Lowell left parts of Hawaii with widespread power outages, flooding, road closures and dangerous surf.

The National Hurricane Center said the core of the storm was expected to pass near or just west of Niihau early Tuesday.

Hurricane Lowell track has nudged east, raising chances for near hurricane-force gusts on Kauai, as well as heavy rain across the Hawaiian Islands.

Hurricane Lowell was skirting western Hawaii, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and punishing waves, the National Hurricane Center said.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Kauai and Niihau as Hurricane Lowell, a Category 3 cyclone, continues on a path to move just west of the islands.

Hurricane Lowell is expected to produce additional rainfall totals of 6 to 10 inches for Kauai, with a possible maximum total of 16 inches. On the Big Island, 4 to 8 inches of rain is expected, with isolated totals of 12 inches possible.

While Lowell is not expected to strike Hawaii directly, the storm remains large enough to pose risks across the state, particularly along exposed coastlines. Forecasters say dangerous surf, localized flooding and strong winds could still affect portions of the islands as the hurricane passes nearby and begins its anticipated weakening trend.
