The first trailer for “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third chapter in director James Cameron’s 16-year-old science-fiction franchise that hits theaters Dec. 19, was unveiled to the press on Monday at Disney’s offices in New York and LA.
The Fire and the Ash introduces a new villain, Varang, alongside the Ash People. The trailer reveals fierce battles as Jake Sully’s family collaborates with the Metkayina to combat Varang and Quaritch's forces.

Since the Avatar franchise uses extensive visual effects to bring the world to life, Chaplin had to use her own determination and personal work to play Varang. She didn't have costumes or sets to help her transform, so instead she decked out her trailer and listened to metal in order to keep her in the right headspace.
The first-look poster of Varang that was released earlier, with a striking red-and-black headdress and volcanic backdrop, had set the tone for something deadly this time.
