Manager Blake Butera is ejected as Washington's late-season struggles continue.

Manny Machado tied the score with a two-run single in the eighth inning, Luis Campusano drove in the go-ahead run and the San Diego Padres rallied past the slumping Washington Nationals 5-4.

It looked as though Padres manager Craig Stammen made a huge blunder when a second mound visit forcibly took Walker Buehler out of the game.

Time will tell there, but the Padres tend to carry a much higher payroll than all other small-market teams. Under A.J. Preller, they seem disinclined to undergo lengthy rebuilds. They trust their ability to rebuild the farm system and the big-league team in a hurry.
