South African photographer Wim van den Heever has received this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year award for his image of a brown hyena outside a ruined diamond mining town.

Wim van den Heever says it took him ten years to finally photograph the rare and elusive brown hyena in Namibia's abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop.

The town, called Kolmanskop, is a ghost of what it used to be in the early 1900s. Wim's photograph aptly captures its eerie vibe.
