Camp Century was built in 1959 and advertised as a U.S. research site—but it also hosted a clandestine missile facility
NASA Rediscovers Cold War Base Buried Under Greenland’s Ice
NASA scientists have located Camp Century, a U.S. military base from the Cold War era, buried deep beneath Greenland’s ice sheet. Built in the 1950s and abandoned in 1967, the base remained hidden under layers of ice for decades.
NASA shows off image "acquired by chance" of U.S. military's abandoned "city under the ice" in Greenland
Scientists now have a clearer picture of Camp Century, an abandoned U.S. military base long hidden under the ice in Greenland, thanks to a NASA research team's good luck.
NASA unexpectedly discovered a city under the Greenland ice sheet
In April 2024, NASA scientist Chad Greene and a team of engineers flew over the Greenland Ice Sheet, using radar to study the ice beneath. While flying east of Pituffik Space Base, Greene captured a photo of the ice sheet’s surface, and the radar unexpectedly detected something buried beneath the ice.
NASA Radar Spots Secret City US Built Under Greenland's Ice
"We were looking for the bed of the ice and out pops Camp Century," NASA scientist Chad Greene said after spotting the secret city and Cold War relic in Greenland. Greene and his team were flying over the Greenland Ice Sheet in April,
NASA radar accidentally finds secret Cold War 'city under the ice' in Greenland
The CIRES-led study used ground-penetrating radar to estimate the amount of waste under the ice. The team found that the waste at Camp Century covers about 136 acres, about the size of 100 football fields, and contains an estimated 53,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 63,000 gallons of wastewater.
NASA Discovers Secret Army Base Buried Under Decades of Ice
Radar surveys occasionally show evidence of the base, lurking there like an environmental time bomb under the ice. But in April 2024, using NASA's Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) strapped to the belly of the plane, scientists were able to resolve Camp Century in a new level of detail.
NASA Uncovers a Hidden Cold War City Buried Beneath Greenland’s Ice
NASA scientists accidentally uncovered Camp Century, a hidden Cold War base under Greenland's ice, using advanced radar technology in April 2024. This discovery not only brings historical artifacts to light but also assists in ice sheet studies critical for understanding future sea level changes.
'City under the ice': NASA scientists find abandoned Cold War military base in Greenland
NASA scientists found Camp Century, an abandoned Cold War military base, during a flight to map the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Scientists Discovers A Forgotten City Hidden Under Ice
In April 2024, scientists flying over Greenland made a surprising discovery. While flying over the ice, they detected a strange signal on their plane's instruments, WP writes. The signal pointed to something buried beneath the ice.
"City under the ice": NASA finds secret base buried in Greenland
NASA's radar revealed Camp Century, a Cold War base under Greenland's ice. It provides data on ice sheet melting and rising sea levels.
