Mendoza said, “we’ll see,” when asked if Jeff McNeil could be activated for the series. McNeil, who has not played this season due to a strained oblique muscle suffered during spring training, is hitting .273 (3-for-11) in four rehab games with Single-A Port St. Lucie, where he is getting some time in centerfield.

The Mets aren’t in any rush to call Alvarez up because his back-up, Luis Torrens, has been playing well. In 16 games, Torrens is batting .255 with a .733, including a big RBI double in the fifth inning in Friday’s wild walk-off win against the Cardinals at Citi Field.

Reinforcements are waiting in the wings for the first-place Mets. Jeff McNeil (right oblique strain) and Francisco Alvarez (fractured left hamate bone) each continued their respective rehab assignments on April 20 with Double-A Binghamton.
