Hawaii's western islands hit by fierce winds from Hurricane Lowell, leaving extensive damage
Damaging winds and heavy rains from Hurricane Lowell were pelting Hawaii's western islands early Tuesday, bringing the threat of floods, mudslides and tornadoes.Along the Southern California coast, dangerous surf conditions kicked up by the remnants of Hurricane Marie were expected to stick around for several days.
Fierce winds downed trees and caused widespread power outages on the island of Kauai, home to 73,000 residents.
More than 90% of customers are without power on Kauai after Lowell's high winds and heavy rains, with rain and dangerous surf forecast to continue.
Hurricane Lowell passed Oahu with wind gusts up to 80 mph, leaving 21,000 without power. Flash flood watches remain in effect.
