Residents of Kauai were warned to watch for tornadoes late Monday as Hurricane Lowell edged toward the westernmost Hawaiian Islands in the U.S. Pacific island chain, the National Weather Service said.
As the hurricane moved closer, the Hawaiian island of Kauai’s annual marathon was canceled. Some residents went ahead with their holiday weekend plans.
The Sheraton Kauai Resort evacuated guests from lower-level rooms but sustained more damage than anticipated. Sand and boulders washed into rooms at another property.
Hawaiian Electric tells us with most of the work following Hurricanes Lowell and Lala completed on Oahu and Hawaii Island, HECO crews are shifting focus to assist with recovery efforts on Kauai,
