Chicago has gained a new Michelin-starred restaurant while four other restaurants lost stars, including two that recently closed.

A year after it opened in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, Mexican restaurant Cariño is a Michelin starred restaurant for its “boldness and creativity.”

Cariño, which opened in November 2023 in Uptown, has earned a Michelin star in its first year of operation. It’s a stunning achievement for chef Norman Fenton, a Detroit native whose tasting menu shows off Mexican and Central American flavors with delicate items like a huitlacoche ravioli and Ora King salmon with a spicy and calming cucumber-jalapeño aguachile.

In total, Chicago is now home to 19 restaurants with either one, two or three Michelin stars, down from 21 in 2023.
