Smart meters come with a communication chip, allowing customers to track their energy use down to the hour. The digital meter also tells Consumers Energy when the power is out.

The meters that have provided monthly updates on electricity use for years will be replaced by new "advanced meters" that will send information about such use every 15 minutes.

Smart meters wirelessly deliver hour-by-hour energy usage information to customers via their online account, eliminating the need to wait for a manual meter read and a monthly bill.

The meters also will track how much energy each customer uses hour-by-hour, allowing the utility to charge different prices for power consumed at different times of the day.
