HOUSTON — Texas health officials report that measles cases have jumped again in an update released Friday morning. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported that 198 measles cases in nine counties have been identified since late January. Twenty-three patients have been hospitalized.
Texas doctors said there's no harm in getting another measles vaccine if you don't know whether you were vaccinated as a child.
Although the outbreak has not spread to the Houston-area yet, health officials have created a proactive plan to prevent the spread of measles. They’ve said they are closely watching schools with low vaccination rates, those under the 95% required to reach herd immunity.
The number of measles cases in Gaines County, the epicenter of the outbreak, has grown to 137, 30 more than the cases reported three days ago.
