Honda is the latest major company to consider a pivot to US manufacturing after Trump revealed his plan to levy 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada.
During his address to Congress Tuesday night, President Donald Trump mentioned that he expects the United States to see growth in the auto industry. He specifically mentioned Honda moving production to Indiana as an example.
On the eve of President Trump's tariffs, Reuters reported Honda would move production of the popular Civic to Indiana. Honda declined to comment.
The new Trump tariff regime represents a fundamental shift in how the U.S. engages with its closest economic partners. While ostensibly meant to strengthen American industry, the tariffs on offer have serious side effects that will likely cause widespread disruptions for businesses, consumers and entire state economies.
The president may have been referencing earlier reports that the Japanese automaker was planning to move some production from Mexico to Indiana in response to impending tariffs.
