Fierce winds downed trees and caused widespread power outages on the island of Kauai, home to 73,000 residents.

On Sept. 7 and 8, Lowell passed by the Hawaiian Islands as a Category 2 hurricane, causing widespread damage across Hawaiʻi. This comes less than a month after Hurricane Lala also caused destruction in the state, with many still recovering.

More than 90% of customers are without power on Kauai after Lowell's high winds and heavy rains, with rain and dangerous surf forecast to continue.

Hurricane Lowell was skirting western Hawaii, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and punishing waves, the National Hurricane Center said.

Officials on Kauaʻi believe that the death of a man found along the shoreline Wednesday afternoon was connected to The Kauaʻi Police Department said the 74-year-old man from Kalaheo was reporting missing in the Nōmilu Fishpond area on the south shore of the island around 9 a.

Hurricane Lowell remains a powerful storm on Tuesday, with numerous warnings still in place for Hawaii.

Hurricane Lowell passed Oahu with wind gusts up to 80 mph, leaving 21,000 without power. Flash flood watches remain in effect.
