As the hurricane moved closer, the Hawaiian island of Kauai’s annual marathon was canceled. Some residents went ahead with their holiday weekend plans.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Kauai and Niihau and a tropical storm watch is in effect for Oahu due to Hurricane Lowell.
Lowell is rushing off to the north at 15 mph and forecast to take a twisting path out to sea. The storm completed a dramatic right turn in recent days and is now expected to be jostled onto a westward track.
