Heavy rain, damaging waves and high winds are expected as Lowell makes a close pass to the western islands.
Hurricane Lowell track has nudged east, raising chances for near hurricane-force gusts on Kauai, as well as heavy rain across the Hawaiian Islands.
The National Hurricane Center said the core of the storm was expected to pass near or just west of Niihau early Tuesday.
A tropical storm warning has been issued for Kauai and Niihau as Hurricane Lowell, a Category 3 cyclone, continues on a path to move just west of the islands.
Hurricane Lowell remains a Category 3 storm with 110 mph winds moving north-northeast toward the western islands. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Kauai and Niihau.
OHA’s Board of Trustees authorized up to $362,800 in disaster assistance during an emergency meeting Wednesday, with a focus on Kauaʻi, Niihau and West Oahu.
