Hawaii's western islands hit by fierce winds from Hurricane Lowell, leaving extensive damage
Damaging winds and heavy rains from Hurricane Lowell were pelting Hawaii's western islands early Tuesday, bringing the threat of floods, mudslides and tornadoes.Along the Southern California coast, dangerous surf conditions kicked up by the remnants of Hurricane Marie were expected to stick around for several days.
Fierce winds downed trees and caused widespread power outages on the island of Kauai, home to 73,000 residents.
Hurricane Lowell is passing just west of the Hawaiian island Niihau on Tuesday, Sept. 8, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Kauai County will close all county parks and campgrounds while opening five refuge areas beginning at 5 p.m. today in anticipation of approaching Hurricane Lowell, according to a news release.
