Paris' centuries-old Louvre Museum — home of da Vinci's iconic Mona Lisa — is getting an $800 million makeover, and American visitors will have to help pay for it.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to expand the Louvre, and move the Mona Lisa to a new exhibition space, after the museum warned of overcrowding.

The world's most visited museum is also overcrowded, antiquated and desperate for renovations that will start next year and include separate space and tickets for Mona Lisa.

The French president announced last week an extensive overhaul of the legendary museum, including a dedicated gallery for Leonardo’s masterpiece and a new entrance and exit that would take advantage of long-underused public spaces.

One of the world's most visited pieces of art is getting a makeover. The exhibit that houses the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris will soon be under construction as museum officials hope to create a space that can accommodate all art lovers.
