NEW YORK (AP) — Frances Tiafoe knew Alex Michelsen needed a shoulder to cry on. So after handing his fellow American a crushing defeat in the U.S. Open quarterfinals Tuesday, Tiafoe held Michelsen in a long embrace while the 22-year-old sobbed into his shoulder.

Frances Tiafoe pulled off the biggest comeback of the US Open. Then he helped produce one of the best moments of the US Open.

Tiafoe had just completed an all-time epic comeback against world No. 46 Alex Michelsen, who was playing in his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. After dropping the first two sets, Tiafoe punched back in the third and fourth sets to force a winner-take-all tiebreaker in the fifth.

Former Terp Francis Tiafoe advanced from the U.S. Open quarterfinals in a five-set thriller against Alex Michelsen. Tiafoe, a College Park native, fought back from being two sets down and won his last three sets 7-5, 6-3 and 7-6 (6).
