Allegheny County Council is now weighing the idea of a smaller property tax hike for next year. This comes after several members indicated that they were already going to reject Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato's plan.

Allegheny County Council introduced a counterproposal to County Executive Sara Innamorato’s 2025 spending plan Tuesday. Council’s plan would cost the median homeowner roughly $10 more in property taxes each month.

A large group of residents, community group leaders, and service providers filled Allegheny County Council chambers Tuesday night to speak in support of a proposed tax increase to fund county government.

It was the largest proposed property tax increase in the history of Allegheny County, and Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato said there would be mass layoffs and service cuts without it. But now council members say they can cut that increase almost in half without reducing staff or services.

Previously, County Executive Innamorato proposed a 46% tax increase. The council is suggesting a 28.5% increase instead.

Allegheny County Council members presented their plan Tuesday to make over $70 million in cuts to Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato’s budget proposal as a means to lower the proposed property tax increase rate that could hit residents next year.
