Utah State introduced its new football coach at a press conference Monday morning in Logan. Proximity to family was a big reason Mendenhall said chose to leave New Mexico and take the Utah State job.

Logan • The first time Bronco Mendenhall joined one of BYU’s rivals, it was purely out of spite. The young Mendenhall was coming out of Snow College, fresh off a JUCO national championship, and wanted to play at BYU.

Mendenhall, a Utah native who coached at BYU for more than a decade, may be a man who needs no introduction in the Beehive State.

“Bronco is one of the most experienced coaches in college football. His leadership, proven track record, and deep understanding of the game make him the ideal choice to elevate our program,” Utah State athletic director Diana Sabau said in a statement.

Utah State believes it has to keep pace with the rest of the country as college football programs prepare for revenue sharing, increased coaching salaries and NIL budgets. And the contract for its new head football coach indicates an increased investment.
