HONOLULU (AP) — Hurricane Lowell’s intense winds and storm surge that battered Hawaii’s western islands this week are suspected in the deaths of at least two people. On the island of Kauai, the storm damaged oceanfront resorts while on Lanai, a cargo port where much of the island’s food and supplies arrive was inoperable, the state’s governor said.

Four days after Hurricane Lowell, Kauai faces major home damage, power outages, and boil water notices while monitoring Hurricane Norbert.

Lowell never officially made landfall, but its widespread impacts made it one of Hawaii's most consequential tropical cyclones in decades.

Severe gales and heavy rain triggered by Hurricane Lowell battered the western islands of Hawaii on Tuesday, severing power to thousands and tearing up stretches of coastal roads. Along the Southern California coast, dangerous surf conditions created by the remnants of Hurricane Marie are expected to linger for several days.

Kaumālapaʻu Harbor was damaged by powerful waves and a storm surge when Lowell passed west of Hawaii earlier this week.

A rare hurricane warning is in effect Kauai and Niihau as the storm’s projected path ekes closer to the state.

Powerful Hurricane Lowell is barreling toward Hawaii and is expected to make a dangerously close pass by the state’s western islands as heavy rain associated with the Category 3 hurricane has already triggered flash flooding on Oahu and damaging surf is pounding Hawaii’s southern shores.

Hurricane Lowell track has nudged east, raising chances for near hurricane-force gusts on Kauai, as well as heavy rain across the Hawaiian Islands.
