Stephen Breyer's brother Charles Breyer will preside over the lawsuit Newsom brought against the Trump administration in California.

The California Governor has sued the U.S. President over the mobilization of the National Guard, calling it “an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

Protests surrounding immigration enforcement actions in the Los Angeles area and the Trump administration's response to them have cued up a public spat between President Trump and Gov. Newsom.

“Multiple groups continue to congregate on 1st St between Spring and Alameda. Those groups are being addressed and mass arrests are being initiated. Curfew is in effect,” read a post on the LAPD’s social media, sent at 9:09p.m local time on Tuesday night.

In announcing the speech, Gov. Newsom called President Trump's actions an "assault on democracy" and called the militarization of Los Angeles illegal.

It's been five days since anti-ICE demonstrations erupted in Los Angeles, some turning violent between protesters and law enforcement officers, prompting President Trump to deploy National Guard troops and hundreds of Marines.

4:47 p.m. EDT The Trump administration asked the judge to reject Newsom’s request and allow it to respond by Wednesday, calling Newsom’s attempt to block the deployment of federal troops “legally meritless” and saying it would jeopardize the safety of Homeland Security personnel and interfere with the government’s ability to carry out operations.
