Holt, who revealed in February that he is stepping down from his longtime anchor role, will take over as the host of 'Dateline' this summer

Llamas kicked off his career at NBC News 25 years ago as an overnight production assistant and rejoined in 2021 as a senior national correspondent. Shortly after his return, he was named the “Top Story” anchor, where he leads breaking news events and special coverage.

Tom Llamas will take over as anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” after Lester Holt steps down this summer, the network announced Wednesday.

On Feb. 24, Holt sent a letter to his colleagues announcing his departure from “NBC Nightly News.” The 65-year-old called his long career “an amazing ride” and said he is “thrilled” to shift to “Dateline” full-time and work on subjects he cares “deeply” about.

Tom Llamas will succeed Lester Holt as the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, NBC announced on Wednesday. He will be the first Latino journalist to host the weeknight edition of the program.

Holt has been anchoring NBC Nightly News for 10 years. He announced his departure on Monday, but assured his fans that he wouldn’t be leaving the network completely. Instead, he’ll be dedicating himself to Dateline NBC full-time. He’s been anchoring the program since 2011.

NBC News announced on Thursday that Tom Llamas will succeed Lester Holt as NBC Nightly News anchor and managing editor, beginning this summer. Llamas will continue to anchor his weeknight NBC News Now program Top Story with Tom Llamas.
