The United States finished top of the swimming medal table at the World Aquatics Championships on Sunday, overcoming a slow start to its campaign in which several of its swimmers battled an outbreak of “acute gastroenteritis.

Yu Zidi, a 12-year-old Chinese athlete, has become the youngest swimmer in history to win a medal at the World Aquatics Championships. China won bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Championships in Singapore, and while Yu did not swim in Thursday’s final, she qualified for a medal after swimming a leg in the heats earlier in the day.

The gold medals were spread around Friday at the swimming world championships, thanks to the absence of stars Léon Marchand of France and Canadian Summer McIntosh from any finals on Day 6 in Singapore
