In the manga, when L is by himself, he sits cross-legged on the floor. My guess is it's just a ritual to get into a certain mindset. Might be a thing of comfortability. He's trying to make friends. He doesn't sit like that when he's sitting on the floor before his face reveal.

I end up sitting like Near more often, but sometimes I do the L pose when I've been sitting in once place too long with nothing to do. I hear its an autism thing.

Oct 17, 2014 · There may be a real reason but I think it's just to add to odd factor of L in the series. I believe it is just sort of a natural habit of his, and it is comfortable and normal for him to sit like this and any other way would be uncomfortable and distract him from the investigation.
