There’s actually no place else on Mare Island that I’ve seen this treatment on. I am imagining it is to slow the release of creosote into the marsh from the pilings. When I drive over the Causeway and glance down to the # Napa River Mare Island Strait below, my first thought is of a graveyard. UPDATE: There actually IS one other place, so far. The pilings that make up the old timey, “one-minute ferry” slip immediately north of the most northerly building way, has rusty caps on all the pilings. J

Some folks split to head back to their cars before I got this video made, but new friends who are from Japan and attend Cal, quite wonderfully took their place for the photo shoot as the sun set over Mt Tamalpais and San Pablo Bay and maybe 300 or more black scoters loafed and flew in small groups along the marshy Mare Island western flank.
