Actinomycetes are filamentous bacteria similar to fungi that grow threadlike hyphae and produce spores. They release enzymes to decompose plant cellulose and harder-to-digest plant and animal materials such as chitin and lignin. Chitin is found in the cell walls of fungi, exoskeletons of arthropods (insects, arachnids, crustaceans, myriapods), as well as nematodes.
