Today marks the 25th anniversary of the first text message sent by Vodafone’s Neil Papworth in 1992. But before Papworth sent his season’s greetings, Friedhelm Hillebrand, of Deutsche Telekom, was searching for the best way to include some kind of simple messaging system in the first major digital mobile standard–GSM. In the early 2000s, texting was booming—and photo messaging was just getting started. A 2001 BBC clip captures the dawn of MMS, when users could finally send grainy pics via early camera phones. It was slow, expensive, and low-res, but a glimpse of the future. By the late 2000s, smartphones and faster networks made picture texting mainstream.
